If we talk about the objective of formal English teaching in Indonesia, there will be several questions to be answered.
The first is about the formal English teaching objective in Indonesia. The government has set the objective of formal English teaching in Indonesia. According to them, after graduating from the high school, the students must mastering all of language skills (speaking, listening, reading, and writing), and also all of language components (grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation).
There are five factors that influence the feasibility of the objective; Methods, Teacher, Student, Time, and Facilities. And the objective of formal English teaching in Indonesia is not feasible because that was too high and does not match with the reality. It would be impossible to make students mastering all of the language skills and language because we don’t have the professional teachers, we don’t have good facilities, we don’t use the suitable methods, and our students don’t have good motivations. If we have high objective, then we must have good supporting factors. At least the students must have good motivation because the students are the most important factors.
Actually, the students do not need mastering all of language skills and all of language components. In other words, the objective must be focused on one aspect that would be the most important and useful for them. For example, students need mastering reading skill because it would be very useful for them when they read some English literatures. But they do not really need speaking, because the environments around them do not require them to speak English.
To create a feasible and useful objective, we have to look at the supporting factors. We have to concern on improving teacher qualification, give the motivations for students, choosing the suitable methods, and improving the facilities like library, textbooks, classroom, etc. Then, after that we can decide the suitable objective.
